Cold Water Dyes - Washing Machine Dyeing

Follow the normal preliminaries...

  • Prepare the fabric. Note that the fabric still needs to be wet & clean for washing-machine dyeing
  • Make the dye solution. Note that you will NOT make a dye bath, you will only make the first-stage dye solution - the dye bath is created in your washing machine when the additional water is added in the normal wash cycle.
  • Make up the salt solution
Dyeing the garment
  • Strain the dye solution through a cloth into a jug
  • Pour this into your washing machine drum
  • Pour the salt solution into you washing machine drum
  • Run through the wash cycle for 15 - 20 minutes. Note - ensure you do NOT include a pre-wash in the cycle.

Fixing the colour

  • Interrupt the cycle (i.e. turn off the machine but leave the wash cycle dial in its current position)
  • Dissolve the sachet of fixative in 1 liter of boiling water
  • Add the fixative solution through the detergent chamber of the machine
  • Re-start the machine and run for a further 50 minutes.
    • Fabric must be in the dye solution for a full 50 minutes; you might need to re-program to extend the washing cycle
    • If the drum does not automatically rotate during heating, you will need to interrupt the cycle periodically, turning the switch to rotate; after a couple of rotations, resume at the heating stage.
  • At the end of the programme, reset the machine to do a normal warm water wash with washing powder.
